Arthur Gerlach (1898 - ?) was FORTUNE's Mister Still-life, allowed great latitude in presenting a variety of objects usually on a double page and in colour. In December 1939 he was awarded the Christmas cover, a lugubrious (even sinister) encirclement of festive lights. It comes as a huge surprise to see him sent to Lourdes in 1934 to bring back the sights.
