Winnie Winkle started in 1930 and was syndicated to French publications thereafter. The original name of the gang, the Rinkydinks was frenchified, as was the lettering throughout. The locales were sort of indeterminate so did not appear to be America in France. Branner retired from the strip in 1962. There are not many female comic charactyers and is significant that Winnie began as a young breadwinner looking after her improvident and useless family, but later became a separate entity, as a hub for the mischievous doings of her gang. |
