My first academic paper was 'Leighton and Whistler for Art's Sake' at the Courtauld. O calamity, o the drabness of it all. I sought to show off my PhD researches but the Ormonds who were writing a book, left so they didn't have to acknowledge anything I had proposed. Mean or what? The academic community or what? From that moment onwards I refused the publishing /curatorial/sherry circuit and disappeared feet first into British Art Schools. JMW would have approved.
