suggestions for DRAWING
DATE.........15 MAY 2024
I cannot decide about this. When i draw , when I sketch on bigger sizes the drawing can become very good and the main thing some of my drawings, sketches i cannot repeat even if i would try very hard. I am thinking maybe i should invest in very good quality paper and and use only good paper. It is really easy to fall into a certain fixed way of drawing. My suggestions to you are the ones I would make as if you were on the first year of the studio based Masters course I ran at Brighton. Restricting the means of achieving drawings (mark making equipment, paper etc) is still some way off in your professional career. RELAX and enjoy what happens to you when you draw. It is not a machine operated commercial dynamic. Above all, challenge yourself. Think of ways to test yourself. 1. give yourself a time limit 2. draw first with the right, then try the left. My ex student, the book illustrator Bruce Whatley had one career with the left hand, and another with the right. https://brucewhatley.com/ 3. yes buy the best paper stock but buy sheets of newsprint bigger than you are . And pin to a wall - then draw. Your energy might benefit from the full body movement. Our friend, the Brazilian sculptor Ana Maria Pacheco did this when I watched in her studio. Very physical. https://prattcontemporaryart.co.uk/artists/ana-maria-pacheco/ she lived with us for a year when she arrived in the UK a political refugee. When you feel confident, alert and only then, when you know what you want to achieve buy some first grade paper, I have added some more drawings. And re. vaginal drawings, in the research page I have added an article on Georgia O’Keefe that might interest you.
