The programme WHIRLIGIG was fronted by another bizarre character creation (see also Muffin the Mule) - Mister Turnip - with his long-suffering straight man Humphrey Lestocq, and a series of other acts including the character actor, Peter Butterworth. Not only was his shape and demeanour threatening to a child but he had a pop-eyed intensity that allowed no nuances of response. What was that thing on his head ?
