It is one of the major achievements of British publishing design that one company should seek to integrate the entire range of its publications - from novels, to dictionaries, part-publications, manuals, school books and many others. When other publishers seemed to design in a haphazard way, by the month, Blackie and Son of Glasgow made one man responsible for this integration - a man of advanced design concepts - Talwin Morris. And that it should also employ Charles Rennie Mackintosh as a freelance designer - was much to its credit. This section of the VTS website shows the visual riches of this pioneering endeavour, and its influence on the design of British book covers in the period 1910 to 1930. As a context it contains a small section of background information on the genesis of the GLASGOW STYLE. |
